Unai López is once again one of those names that appear on the market without making too much noise, but there is quite a bit of interest behind it. The 30-year-old midfielder ends his contract with Rayo Vallecano next June 30, and as expected, his calendar is already quite busy.

The player from Donostia is receiving calls from practically half the world: European clubs, from the MLS in the United States, and even proposals from Mexico. In short, he won’t be short of options to choose from this summer.

Unai arrives free, without a transfer fee involved, which makes him a quite desirable piece for many teams looking for experience and good skill in midfield. In Vallecas he has regained prominence and consistency, which always counts when the market opens.

Meanwhile, Athletic Club remains attentive to the situation. It’s no surprise; they have previously closely followed players with a past at Lezama, and Unai fits that profile of a homegrown player who could strengthen the squad. The lions’ season has not been as good as expected and with the arrival of the new coach Edin Terzic, they are evaluating whether he is an interesting player to reinforce the team for the next season.

The problem, as always, is the context. Athletic’s midfield is quite crowded and any addition requires first moving pieces around. Moreover, the club is currently in a phase of deciding what to do with several pieces and possible arrivals, so it’s not a simple or immediate move.

The player is taking it calmly. He has made it clear in some interviews that he is focused on finishing the season well and enjoying the moment, without rushing decisions. 

What seems clear is that this summer could be eventful for him. América or even a return to a familiar destination. Options are not lacking, and now it’s time to see which one fits best for his next stage.
