The medical test carried out this Monday has confirmed the muscle injury of Toni Martínez. The Murcia-born striker has a micro-tear in the soleus of his right leg and will be away from the pitch for between two and three weeks.

The attacker, aged 29, will not be able to play this Sunday at Mendizorroza against Osasuna, in the derby for the fourth matchday. He is also not expected to be available for the visit by the blue-and-white side to Racing de Santander, scheduled for Saturday 12 September.

His participation against Valencia, on Tuesday 15 September in Vitoria, will depend on how he progresses over the coming days. The most likely scenario is that he could return against Athletic on Saturday 19 at San Mamés, although neither the player nor the club will take risks during his recovery.

After that match, there will be an international break of almost three weeks. That window would allow Toni Martínez to complete his recovery at Ibaia before returning to competition.

A significant absence for Quique

The injury is a setback for Quique, who loses an important piece of his attack despite the fact that the forward has not yet scored in this league. Toni Martínez started and played the full 180 minutes against Getafe and Rayo Vallecano, and also played the opening 54 minutes against Villarreal.

His importance to the team comes after a season in which he scored 14 league goals and 18 in all competitions. He featured in 43 matches and only missed one due to a technical decision.

The absence will force the Madrid coach to make changes in the forward line. One of the options is Aitor Mañas, who was already a starter on matchday one against Getafe due to Lucas Boyé's injury, alongside Mariano.
