A bombshell in the market that shakes up Malaga

Málaga's interest in the signing of a striker accelerated after the close of the summer transfer window, after a season start with flashes of quality but with a lack of goal-scoring instinct, along with the low level of Chupe in recent matches, as well as the plague of injuries the club is suffering, with Lobete as the biggest victim of this situation, since he will miss the rest of the season. For this reason, Málaga can use a significant portion of the Spanish forward's salary to try to fish in the market for free agents, the piece that will help the team both from the center of the attack and from the flanks.

A forward with international experience

Anthony Martial arrives as a free agent after terminating his contract with the Monterrey club, where he shared the dressing room with Sergio Ramos. The French attacker was developed in the Mónaco youth system and spent much of his career in the Manchester United, a period in which he won the Golden Boy in 2015 and where he had his best seasons. Along the way, he also passed through Spain, on loan at the Sevilla during 2021/22, although without making a good impression at the Nervión side. Now, Martial would have rejected several proposals from the Ligue 1 and Saudi to prioritize a new project in LaLiga with the boquerón outfit.

The salary cap, a minor issue in the deal

The negotiations between Málaga and the player are already well advanced, and what remains to be resolved are mainly small details to fit the signing into the club's accounts. The route that makes it possible is LaLiga's regulations. The injury to Lobete, with a cruciate and collateral ligament rupture that rules him out for the entire season, allows Málaga to process his federative release and replace his spot with another outfield player, as long as they are a free agent. To do so, the club can allocate up to the 80% of the salary cap that Lobete was using, a margin that Loren Juarros already described as sufficient to make some moves. Added to that is the club's own resource management carried out during the summer window, which leaves Málaga with financial capacity to carry out the operation without compromising the direction of the squad.

Versatility in attack, a signing needed for Funes

Martial's possible arrival today would not be intended to put Chupe's starting spot at risk despite his dip in performance; instead, Chupe would remain the main reference up front, with Adrián Niño and Martial as the main options off the bench, and Jáuregui as an alternative for specific moments. Martial's real value would lie in his versatility. The Frenchman can also play on the left wing, a position that took a hard hit after the injuries to Lobete and Ochoa. In this way, Martial's entry into the team could give rest to Joaquín and Juan Cruz without the team losing attacking bite, and even Funes could test him as a second striker, an option that would open the door to tweaking the team's tactical setup. Therefore, as of today, Martial's role would precisely be that: the piece that grants flexibility to the XI by being able to come in from different points in the attack to change the flow of matches depending on what the team needs.
