LaLiga 2026/27 opening weekend set to be split by the World Cup
LaLiga 2026/27 already has a start date, but not all teams may kick off at the same time. The competition will begin the weekend of 15 and 16 August, with the possibility that a match could be moved to Friday 14. However, the 2026 World Cup could lead to a split opening round in order to protect the rest of players who go furthest with their national teams.
The schedule for next season is shaped by an exceptional situation: the World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada will end on 19 July, just a few weeks before LaLiga begins. For that reason, clubs with players involved in the semi-finals or the final of the tournament could see their league debut postponed.
Two blocks to start the season
The plan being considered is that the first round of LaLiga could be split into two windows. In the first block would be the matches involving teams that do not have players affected by the World Cup's final phase. Those games would be played between the 14, 15 and 16 August, keeping the competition's traditional start.
The second block would affect matches in which any club takes part with players who have reached the World Cup's final rounds. In that case, LaLiga reserves the option to postpone the fixtures by a few days, with alternative dates that could fall in the final stretch of August, especially around the 25, 26 and 27 August.
In practice, we already have an extra matchday planned thanks to this measure. The competition begins with an additional margin to reschedule the fixtures most affected by the World Cup, preventing the clubs involved from having to compete without their internationals or with players who have just returned and have barely had any preparation.
The reason: rest, holidays and pre-season
The key is the mandatory rest period for players. Those who reach the semi-finals or the final of the World Cup will finish their season very late, so they will need a minimum period of holidays before rejoining their clubs. After that, they will also have to complete a short pre-season to avoid physical risks at the start of the campaign.
AFE argued for delaying the start of the entire competition until 23 August, believing it was the fairest way to guarantee equality between all teams and better preparation for the players. However, the criterion that has prevailed is to keep the start in mid-August, but with the possibility of postponing the matches most affected by the World Cup.
Which teams could be affected?
Until the World Cup progresses, it will not be known for sure which clubs will have to change their league debut. Everything will depend on the national teams that reach the semi-finals and on how many LaLiga players are part of those squads.
Teams such as Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico de Madrid, Athletic Club, Real Sociedad, Villarreal or Betis, among others, could be watching the progress of their internationals. However, the real impact will depend on the final call-ups and how far each team goes in the tournament.
Fantasy impact: watch the start of the season
For fantasy managers, this situation could be especially important. A split matchday or postponed fixtures can affect the first line-ups, rotations and the availability of some key players.
Players who go far in the World Cup could start the season with less minutes load, come into the starting XI progressively, or even miss the first matchday if their team requests the postponement. That is why it will be crucial to keep a close eye on the calendar draw, the World Cup call-ups and the physical condition of the internationals during pre-season.
In addition, this planning could have a direct effect on fantasy games: some matches could count later, certain players will arrive with less match sharpness, and it will be essential to review the final calendar before locking in the first line-ups of the season.
Matchday 1 with an asterisk
LaLiga will kick off in mid-August, but it will do so with a calendar shaped by the World Cup. The first matchday may not be played in full over a single weekend, and several teams could debut later if they have players who have reached the tournament's final rounds.
In fantasy terms, it will be a matchday to analyse calmly. It will not be enough to look at the calendar: you will also need to check which players return late from the World Cup, which clubs have the most internationals affected, and which coaches choose to hold back important pieces at the start of the campaign.
