DFThis Tuesday, the blue-and-white club confirmed the signing of Fernando Calero, a centre-back with extensive experience at the top level who arrives to bolster Juanfran Funes' back line.
The defender has signed a contract for one season with the option to extend his stay for one more year. The Málaga are thus returning to a similar formula to the one used last summer, although on this occasion the aim is to fill the vacancy left by Javi Montero after his departure.
Calero arrives at La Rosaleda as a free agent after ending his contract with the Espanyol on 1 July. The Valladolid native brings to an end seven consecutive campaigns in LaLiga, a spell in which he amassed 143 official matches and started in 110 of them.
His arrival responds to one of the priorities of the sporting directorate: adding experience to a defence with several players who will face their first season in the top flight. The new centre-back's presence provides a proven profile to support players such as Carlos Puga, Diego Murillo or Álex Pastor.
Calero began his development at the Atlético Malagueño before continuing his career at the Real Valladolid, from where he made the step up to the Espanyol in the summer of 2019.
The deal had been in the pipeline for months and only the right moment was needed to make it official, and with the announcement already made, the defender will be able to join immediately for pre-season and start preparing, alongside the rest of the squad, for the league opener, scheduled for 19 August against Atlético de Madrid at the Riyadh Metropolitano.
